Your rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union entered into force on 25 May 2018. GDPR assigns new obligations and responsibilities to data controllers and processors.

As a seller, you are usually responsible for your customers' data. This means that by collecting your customers' data, you choose how it is processed. Also, although GDPR is a European regulation, GDPR applies to your business if you offer products and services in Europe, even if your location or business location is not in Europe.

As a processor of your customers' data, Shopify follows your instructions on how to process that data. For information on Shopify's obligations as a processor of your customer data, see the Data Processing Addendum.

Shopify believes in protecting your customers' personal data as if it were your own, and recognizes that doing so is critical to helping you maintain your customers' trust in you. Shopify designed its platform to enable merchants to operate anywhere in the world. GDPR compliance features are built into Shopify's platform, including features that allow you to give your customers transparency and control over their personal data, and technical measures to ensure that your customers' personal data is protected internationally. Shopify believes in the importance of making it easy for you to use our platform, in compliance with privacy and data protection laws such as GDPR.

While Shopify does its best to set you up for success, there are steps you need to take yourself, and compliance with GDPR is each seller's own responsibility. If you have legal questions about your obligations under the GDPR, consult a local attorney who is familiar with data protection laws.
